For friendship pin making:
1-1/8"  or 1-1/16" are usually used for the "picture".
1-1/2" is usually used for the "holder" (top)
(see individual friendship pin pattern for the ones to use) 
These pin sizes are common for friendship pin making.  Because of the inconsistent hole sizes in seed beads, some beads in a package will not fit on a safety pin shank- others will. This is common, no matter who you buy your beads from, and there is no control over it.  You should always order bead amount with this in mind.
